Salva Kiir signs the peace deal

The African Union has cautiously welcomed the decision by South Sudan’s president but it says the real test will be whether the deal actually holds.

Before signing the deal, Salva Kiir expressed his reservations about the mediation process and some clauses contained within the deal.

Kiir had earlier on refused to sign the deal and requested a 15 day window to iron out outstanding issues.

The move however drew threats of U.N. Sanction. Several regional leaders attended the signing ceremony, including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Kenya’s Uhurru Kenyatta.
