The African Union urged Sudan’s transitional military council and the civilian stakeholders to continue working together towards a consensual solution to the current crisis facing the country.
The statement by the AU’s Peace and Security Council comes in the wake of a meeting between the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Ambassador Smail Chergui and president of the TMC Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan.
“The Peace and Security Council calls on all Sudanese stakeholders to uphold the supreme interest of their country above all other consideration,” the statement read in part.
Sudan is currently experiencing a two-day general strike to exert pressure on the military council to hand over power to a civilian-led authority.
The strike was called by the Alliance for Freedom and Change protest movement after the military and protest leaders failed to reach an agreement over the new sovereign council.
The strike left several travelers stranded in Khartoum as public transport staff boycotted work for a second day.
Hundreds of employees in government offices, banks, private sector firms and the docks of Port Sudan also joined the strike on Tuesday.
A representative of a coalition within the DFCF, Wagdy Saleh, said the strike would be intensified if no agreement is reached.
The AU insists that the solution to the current crisis must be based on the respect of the will and aspirations of the people of Sudan to democratic transformation and an inclusive consensus among all stakeholders.
