A delegation from the African Union (AU) has already arrived in South Sudan for the push of the country’s national unity government that is aimed at ending the two-year brutal civil war that has killed thousands and displaced thousands more.

Rebel leader Riek Machar is expected to arrive in the capital Juba on April 18 to take up the post of vice president.

In anticipation of his return, more than 1,300 forces loyal to him were flown to the city on Monday to ensure his security.

South Sudan descended into violence in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his then deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup to overthrow his government.

Machar refuted the claims but went on to mobilize troops to fight the government.

The African Union has been pushing both sides to get into an agreement that will bring peace back in the world’s youngest nation.

President Salva Kiir last month re-appointed Machar as his deputy in a transitional unity government.

The AU tweeted some photos of its delegation meeting with Kiir.
