The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat sent a message congratulating the Sudanese stakeholders for the progress being made towards reaching an agreement for a political transition in Sudan.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mahamat also congratulated stakeholders for their responsibility to complete the negotiation cycle in a reasonable time so as to properly address the legitimate concerns of the Sudanese people.
The AUC says the Chairperson’s principal strategic adviser, Professor Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt, is in Khartoum to oversee its technical support to the political transition process.
The AUC‘s statement follows an announcement by the transitional military council (TMC) of an agreement with the opposition alliance – the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces (DFCF) – for a three-year transition period to a civilian administration.
The TMC said the alliance would have two-thirds of the seats on a legislative council. The rest would be taken by parties not part of the alliance.
Lieutenant General Yasser al-Atta said a final agreement on power-sharing, which includes the forming of a sovereign council, would be signed with the DFCF within 24 hours.
However, the two sides are yet to agree on a sovereign council which will rule the country until elections are held.
The TMC has ruled Sudan since President Omar al-Bashir was ousted from office on April 11 following months of civilian protests.
The protesters have kept up their demonstrations as they continue to demand for a transition to a civilian-led government.
In April, African leaders meeting in Cairo agreed to give the TMC three months to implement democratic reforms.
