Attack in western Libya kills at least four security personnel

Read < 1 minute

Four security personnel manning a checkpoint in western Libya were killed on Thursday in an attack that also left seven injured.

No group has claimed the attack, but it comes barely a day after Islamic State leader Abubaker al-Baghdadi urged his followers to mobilize and increase activities in Libya, Syria and Iraq.

The mayor of Zliten, Miftah Hamadi, confirmed the attack, saying it was staged by three militants. One died and two escaped.

The militants first approached the checkpoint in a car, but then went on foot to launch the attack using guns, hand grenades and knives.

Witnesses are reported to say that three security personnel had their throats slit.

IS lost its major stronghold in central Libya nearly two years ago.

Since then its fighters have carried out deadly attacks on checkpoints in the country, as well as once targeting the election commission headquarters in the capital, Tripoli.
