Two people were also reported missing from the attack that took place in the small northern town of Silgadji near Djibo, the capital of Soum province.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers fired at Christian worshippers as the victims were leaving a church service at around 1pm on Sunday.

A member of the church told AFP that the attackers ‘were on motorbikes and fired in the air before aiming at the members of the congregation.”

Burkina Faso has been struggling with jihadist violence since 2015, several hundred people have lost their lives in the violence.

In February, a Catholic priest was killed in a raid attributed to jihadist groups and in March, a group of gunmen kidnapped another priest in the north.

The violence and attacks have forced tens of thousands to flee from their homes in the past few months.
