At least five people were killed on Saturday after gunmen attacked a village in Kaduna State located to the northwest of Nigeria, local media report.
The raid which was conducted in Sabon Sara village in Giwa also left scores other injured, the latest in a string of insecurity incidents that have rocked the West African nation.
Local reports indicate that the gunmen sought to kidnap a renowned farmer in the area, but they met opposition from the villagers. This prompted them to fire indiscriminately, killing five people.
The villagers succeeded in killing one of the attackers.
Security authorities later said normalcy had returned to the area, and investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend the attackers.
Nigeria has lately been rocked by clashes in the northern part of the country, which have killed tens of people and left hundreds injured.
The country just recently held its presidential election which saw Muhammadu Buhari win a second and final mandate.
Security has once again been a sector the 76-year-old pledged to work on in his new term.
“The new administration will intensify its efforts in security, restructuring the economy and fighting corruption,” Buhari said following his election victory.
