At least 40 thousand people are facing death by starvation. That’s according to the United Nations (UN). The UN is blaming the ongoing conflict in South Sudan. Most of those struggling are in Unity, Jonglei, and Upper Nile States. They’ve been hardest hit by the conflict in the country that’s been dragging on for months.
However it is not only the conflict areas suffering, areas in Northern Bahr El Ghazal and Warrap states have also been affected heavily by the on going hunger due to price inflation and market disruptions tied to the conflict in the other parts of the country.
The UN says people have been forced to scavange swamps to survive. They’re eating water lilies to survive. Aid agencies are struggling to get in and help. That’s after government imposed restrictions on access.
According to the at least 25 percent of the people in South Sudan which is 2.8 million are in urgent need of food assistance. The UN further states that a prompt implementation of the peace agreement is absolutely critical to improving the food situation in the country.
Non-Governmental organizations (NGO’s)/ Aid workers have faced challenges in doing their work due a law that was recently passed by the South Sudan parliament restricting their work and number of foreign aid workers.
