At least 259 killed by cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe – IOM
At least 259 people were killed in Zimbabwe by the tropical cyclone than swept through southern Africa from last week, the United Nations migration agency said on Friday.
The International Organization for Migration said in a statement that hundreds of people had been injured, with some 16,000 households displaced.
Cyclone Idai hit southern Africa from 14 Thursday, sweeping through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The cyclone left a train of destruction in those countries, wrecking buildings, roads and bridges, while also causing massive destruction to crop farms.
In Mozambique alone, it is feared that some 1,000 people were killed.
Local and international aid agencies have set up camps in the three countries to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected.
In total, cyclone Idai is believed to have affected more than 1.7 million people.
