At least 13 people have died and 142 others are still missing after a passenger boat capsized this week in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Lake Kivu, President Felix Tshisekedi said on Thursday.

Tshisekedi was speaking to journalists near the site of the accident in South Kivu Province, where he confirmed that some 37 passengers had been rescued.

He expressed his condolences to the families affected by the Lake Kivu accident, and pledged investigations to determine its cause.

The accident comes nearly one year after the country witnessed another tragic accident in which more than 50 people dies after their boat sank in a river.

Water travel is common in the DR Congo, as some parts of the vast country do not have goor road and rail networks.
