Asamoah Gyan declares support for Weah in Liberia’s presidential contest
Ghana football’s captain Asamoah Gyan has declared his support for Liberia’s presidential hopeful George Weah.
A retired football star – the only African to win the coveted Ballon d’Or – Weah is contesting against vice president Joseph Boakai in today’s run-off vote.
The 51-year-old emerged winner in the first round of voting in October by garnering 39 per cent of the vote against Boakai’s 29.1 percent.
Gyan, the all-time top scorer for the Black Stars, believes Weah’s hard work on the pitch can be replicated in his presidency should he win.
“You didn’t win World Best Footballer on a platter of gold, you really worked hard for it and I know your motivation was from the love of your country Liberia,” he said in a statement.
He urged Liberians to rally behind the former PSG and AC Milan player, saying he had the potential to make Liberia a better place.
“To my brothers and sisters in Liberia, George Weah has sacrificed his entire life for this beautiful country of yours. He has his country at heart and [is] willing to work to make Liberia a better place,” he said in the statement.
This is Weah’s second attempt at the presidency after vying in 2005 and losing to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
