Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will continue his chase for a second consecutive Golden Boot tonight as he captains Arsenal against Manchester City, the first of two games that mark the resumption of the Premier League.
The Londoners travel to the Etihad in search of a first win against the Citizens since January 2015.
Aubameyang currently trails Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy by two goals in the Premier League’s Golden boot chase, having found the back of the net 17 times.
The Gabonese star is touted as one of Europe’s most deadly centre-forwards, having joining Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.
The 30-year-old has scored 61 goals in 97 appearances for the Gunners, and he currently holds the fourth-best goals-per-game ratio in Premier League history behind Thierry Henry, Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero.
His reputation has made him one of the most sought-after strikers and is at the center of transfer rumors as his contract with Arsenal runs out in 2021.
Aubameyang has been linked with other giant European clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and lately Manchester United.
In an interview with Telefoot at the weekend, the striker threw the ball into Arsenal’s court regarding the contract situation.
“They know very well why so far nothing has happened. They have the keys. It is up to them to do their work and, after that, we will see how things go,” he said.
Aubameyang shared the 2018/2019 Golden Boot with Liverpool duo of Mohamed Salah and Sadion Mane after each scored 22 goals.
Salah currently has 16 goals while Mane has 14.
Tonight’s games mark the return of Premier League football after a 100-day absence due of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The other game will see Aston Villa host Sheffield United.
