Arsenal legend Thierry Henry crowned “Igwe of Football” in Nigeria

Football legend Thierry Henry who plied his trade for Arsenal and France was on Sunday crowned the Igwe of football at an event in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

Igwe is a Nigerian word for King and for many Nigerian football fans that is how they can describe the lethal striker.

 

Henry was in Lagos to meet the ‘Be a Front Row Fan’ winners: a consumer promotion of the company also watched the West Brom v Manchester United EPL game.

The Frenchman clad in the attire of an Igbo chief, was also unveiled as an ambassador for the Guiness Made of Black campaign.

The footballer who retired from football in 2014 also participated in the cooking of Jollof rice.

Henry was also in Kenya where he conducted football training camps with four community clubs in the capital Nairobi. He also interacted with Kenyan football fans taking selfies with them despite the menacing security men around him.

He promised to visit the East African nation for some more roasted meat popularly known as nyama choma.

The 40-year-old legend started his playing career at Monaco at the age of 17, but ever since he has played for Juventus, Barcelona and New York Red Bulls before retiring in 2014.

He is Arsenal’s all-time leading goal scorer with 228 goals in all competitions.
