Anthrax outbreak kills 10 buffaloes in Kenya
Kenya is on high alert following the breakout of anthrax at one of its national parks that left some 10 buffaloes dead.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on Sunday reported preliminary findings showed that the buffaloes, at the Lake Nakuru National Park, died from anthrax.
According to KWS, the first case was reported on March 29.
The prolonged dry and hot conditions in the park are partly to blame for the outbreak, the authority said.
“We have taken surveillance action and everything now is under control as our veterinary doctors are on the ground vaccinating the buffaloes and monitoring the situation,” KWS spokesperson Paul Githitu said.
Samples of the carcasses have been taken to the government laboratory in Nakuru, 140 kilometers form the capital Nairobi, for further analysis.
KWS has vaccinated several white rhinos as a precaution because they are in close contact with the buffaloes.
Staff have also had anti-anthrax jabs, with KWS offering protective gear to those in close contact with animals.
The last anthrax case at the park was reported in 2015
