Angola’s main opposition party has filed a petition in court challenging the election win by the ruling MPLA party last month.
The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) says the electoral process failed to comply with the law, and is confident the evidence it has will convince the court to nullify the vote.
“The law was completely violated and that means the results which the CNE published are invalid,” UNITA spokesman Ruben Sicato said.
We hope the constitutional court does its job.”
According to UNITA, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) tampered with the results from multiple provinces to favour MPLA.
The electoral body last week declared João Lourenço the new President, coming in to replace Jose Eduardo dos Santos who ruled the oil-rich country for 38 years.
The Angola situation comes amid preparations for an election repeat in Kenya after the country’s Supreme Court nullified the 8 August poll, a first for Africa.
In its ruling, the court said that the result declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was marred with irregularities, and that the figures were not legitimate.
Kenya’s repeat election is now scheduled for 17 October.
