Angola qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after edging out Botswana 1-0 in Francistown, Botswana with Wilson Eduardo’s goal sending them through at the expense of Burkina Faso.
Heading into the final round of matches, Angola was second on nine points while Burkina Faso was third on seven points.
Both teams needed a win and hoped the other would slip up in order to progress from Group I with Mauritania.
Burkina Faso beat Mauritania 1-0 in Ouagadougou and finished third in the group. Angola’s win meant they finished top with Mauritania second.
The game in Francistown, however, had its share of controversies. It was supposed to be played simultaneously with the one in Ouagadougou but started 10 minutes later and was further delayed in the second half due to floodlight failure.
Meanwhile in Group D, already-qualified Algeria secured top spot following a 1-1 draw at home against Gambia.
Mamadou Danso equalized for the visitors in injury time after Mehdi Abeid opened the scoring. The result means the West African nation misses out on the tournament as they needed a win and other results to go their way.
In the other group game, Benin play Togo on Sunday needing a draw or a win to join Algeria from the group. Togo, must win to go through.
