Andre Onana back in Cameroon squad for AFCON qualifier
Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana will once more play for the Indomitable Lions. Coach Rigobert Song named him in the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Burundi.
Onana stunned the world by announcing his retirement from international football in December after he was suspended from the national team during the FIFA World Cup. The team initially dropped him from the team following a disagreement with Song over his preferred style of play.
However, while announcing the squad in Yaounde, Song downplayed any wild reactions surrounding Onana’s return stating that there was never any problem with him.
“I think that today if he (Onana) is on the list it is because he has done what was expected of him and today I think that he is one of the best goalkeepers,” Song said.
27-year-old Onana made his debut for Cameroon in 2016 and he went on to amass 34 caps. His last game for Cameroon was a 1-0 defeat against Switzerland last November.
Cameroon hosts Burundi in Garoua on September 12 needing only a draw to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire next year.
