“It is clear that any decision to change the nature, status or demographic composition of the city of al-Quds al-Sharif (Jerusalem) will have no legal effect and will be null and void,” Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel told reporters after an economic cooperation meeting between Algeria and Netherlands in the capital Algiers.
The conflict in Palestine “is a conflict of denial of the fundamental right of the Palestinian people to live free and independent,” Messahel said.
The resolution “requires just, comprehensive and sustainable peace on the basis of a two-state solution and in accordance with the law and resolutions of international legitimacy,” he noted.
Visiting Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok also called on the international community to spare no effort in achieving the two-state solution.
“The disputing parties are not ready to negotiate at this point, and we have to help them take a step further toward a two-state solution until this issue emerges from the spiral of negativity,” Blok noted.
U.S. President Donald Trump declared his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December 2017, and has ordered the relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed holy city on May 14.
