Aleksander Čeferin is the new UEFA president after his election into the position at the European body’s Extraordinary Congress in Athens last night.

Čeferin replaces embattled Michel Platini following his win last night. He received 42 votes against his opponent Michael van Praag who got 13.

The 48-year-old was fast to make his mark, saying that his first priority will be to make Champions League reforms.

Ceferin, who has been the head of the Football Association of Slovenia since 2011, takes on the remainder of Platini’s term of office, until 2019.

The Slovenian acknowledged that there was “a lot of work to do”, citing match-fixing, security and safety, and racism as issues that need to be addressed.

Michel Platini resigned from his position following his ban from all football related activities last year.
