Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet confirmed the incident but did not give further details on what was stolen from the station.

“Yes there was an attack but officers put stiff resistance and fought them off despite Al Shabaab numbering over 100 in three trucks and heavy mortar fire,” the IG said.

Independent police sources pleading anonymity said more than 10,000 bullets, 13 AK47 rifles, police uniform and other items were stolen from the station.

The terrorists also raided local shops in Wajir before they escaped but no major casualties were reported.

The station has previously suffered a similar attack when it was even burnt down.
