The Al-Shabaab commander who led the El-Adde attack that killed several Kenyan army soldiers has been killed in a retaliatory airstrike launched by the Kenyan forces.

Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Samson Mwathethe has revealed that Maalim Janow, believed to have commanded the Islamist militants attack on the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) was killed in the airstrike launched after the incident, Standard Media reports.

Gen. Mwathethe also said they are yet to know the exact number of KDF soldiers injured or dead, as the search and rescue mission came to an end on Thursday.

He however declined to divulge the number of soldiers that had been rescued alive, and the dead ones.

The general said that some bodies were badly mutilated and would require DNA tests for their identification.

He also revealed that a board of enquiry had landed at the camp and started investigations to find out what happened.

Gen. Mwathethe as well denied claims that KDF had prior intelligence warning of a pending attack on the camp.

“A number of soldiers are missing in action and we have not accounted for all of them. We will know more once the team investigating the attack completes its work,” he said.
