Al Shabaab claims responsibility for attacks in and around Mogadishu

Read < 1 minute

Somalia’s Islamist group al Shabaab set off a suicide car bomb at a security checkpoint about 15 kilometres outside the capital Mogadishu on Thursday, the group’s spokesman and a police official have said.

The blast has caused casualties, according to the police officer, Major Abdullahi Nur, but he did not elaborate on whether that meant some had died or were only injured.

The incident occurred a few hours after a mortar attack  Thursday morning in Mogadishu. The African peacekeeping force AMISOM says three people were killed and two others wounded. Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for that incident as well.
