Al-Qaeda frees South African kidnapped in 2011
A South African man who was kidnapped by al-Qaeda from Mali has been released and is back home.
Stephen McGowan was abducted while on holiday with his family in Timbuktu in November 2011.
South African authorities through South African Minister for International Relations Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said no ransom was paid for McGown’s release and that it had been secured with the help of “cooperation and collaboration” from the family.
Doctors are still attending to McGown and will continue to monitor his health.
CGTN’s Yolisa Njamela has the story.
