Al-Bashir defies ICC, lands in Rwanda for AU Summit
Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir is in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, for the African Union leaders’ Summit amid the International Criminal Court’s warrant for his arrest.
Rwanda dismissed calls for the president’s arrest if he attends the summit, saying it is not obligated to do so as it is not part of the Rome Statute.
“Africa doesn’t support criminals, but when justice is involved with a lot of politics we take a pause to separate the two.” Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said.
Ahead of the summit, some African countries renewed efforts to quit the ICC en masse despite opposition of some countries like Botswana.
President al-Bashir is wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
