Akani Simbine clocks season’s best to win London DL 100m

South African sprinter Akani Simbine on Saturday won the men’s 100 metres race in 9.93 seconds at the at the London Anniversary Games in London.

Simbine edged out Britain’s Zharnel Hughes (9.95) and double Olympic gold medalist Yohan Blake of Jamaica (9.97) to claim his first Diamond League win of the season and a first Diamond League win since 2017.

The highly competitive race saw the top five finishers all clock under 10 seconds on the night.

Canadian sprinter and triple Olympic medalist Andre De Grasse, who has battled with a series of injuries and illness since the 2016 Olympic Games, finished fifth clocking a season’s best time of 9.99.

Additionally, three other sprinters clocked season’s bests in the race: Simbine, Hughes and Britain’s Adam Gemili (10.04) while Japan’s Yuki Koike, who finished fourth, clocked a personal best (9.98).

Simbine’s win sees him qualify for the Diamond League final in Zurich along with American Christian Coleman, who currently leads the Diamond qualification standings.
