Africa’s highest and longest bridge in Morocco near completion
Construction of what’s been dubbed as Africa’s highest and longest motorway suspension bridge is nearing an end.The $ 72 million bridge, links the Moroccan capital, Rabat with the north western city of Sale, and it is part of a larger project rerouting the major highway system that runs from Tangier to Casablanca. The bridge is 30.4 meters wide and 950 metres long. It will open next year and officials hope it will improve safety and reduce traffic congestion. Autoroutes du Maroc, which is spearheading the project, is providing about 20% of the funds, with the European Investment Bank providing the remainder
“The major significance of this highway that connects Rabat with Sale is that it also connects the road network of the North with that of the South, that has today reached 1,588 kilometres and is currently in use, which will reach 1,800 kilometres in 2016. This will enhance the national economy and will also enhance trade between the North and the South, that is to say Europe and Africa.”Said Adil Cherribi, head of communications, Autoroutes du Maroc
