Africa’s COVID-19 infections hit 1,293,048: Africa CDC
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa stood at 1,293,048 on Monday as the continent continues to see a rise in infections.
Figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the continent had also reported 31,082 deaths.
Some countries on the continent have seen a recent decline in new infections while other continue to report steady rises.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the continent, having reported 638,517 confirmed cases and 14,889 deaths. The figures represent 49.4 percent of Africa’s caseload and 47.9 percent of its fatalities.
Egypt is the second-worst-affected country in Africa, having registered 99,863 cases and 5,530 deaths.
Other than the two worst-hit countries, only Morocco (72,394), Ethiopia (58,672) and Nigeria (55,005) have recorded more than 50,000 infections.
Further on, eight countries on the continent have reported more than 20,000 infections.
In terms of fatalities, other than South Africa and Egypt, the only other countries that have reported more than 1,000 deaths are Algeria (1,556), Morocco (1,361) and Nigeria (1,057).
