The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa stood at 1,291,724 on Sunday evening as the some countries on the continent begin to see a decline in daily new infections.
Figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the continent has also reported 31,056 deaths.
South Africa remains the worst-affected country on the continent, having recorded 636,884 cases and 14,779 deaths.
The figures represent 49.3 percent of the continent’s caseload and 47.6 percent of its fatalities.
Egypt is the second-hardest-hit country in Africa, with 99,712 confirmed infections and 5,511 deaths,
These two countries alone account for 57 percent of Africa’s total infections and 65.3 percent of its deaths.
Further on, besides South Africa and Egypt, only Morocco (70,160), Ethiopia (57,466) and Nigeria (54,905) have reported more than 50,000 COVID-19 cases on the continent.
In terms of fatalities, Algeria (1,549), Morocco (1,329) and Nigeria (1,054) are the only other African countries besides South Africa and Egypt to have reported more than 1,000 deaths.
In better news, Africa has reported 1,031,453 successful recoveries.
