The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa stood at 1,412,310 on Tuesday with a death toll of 34,072, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The continent continues to see a rise in infections, even though some countries have started recording shrinking numbers of new daily cases.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the continent, having reported 661,936 infections and 15,992 fatalities.
The figures represent 46.9 percent of the continent’s caseload and 46.9 percent of its death toll.
Morocco has reported the second-highest COVID-19 caseload in Africa, having registered 103,119 cases and 1,855 deaths. The North African country has seen a rise in its caseload over the past weeks, leapfrogging Egypt which for long had the second-highest number of confirmed cases.
Egypt now has the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases, at 102,141 with 5,787 deaths.
The three countries are the only ones in Africa to have reported more than 100,000 infections.
Further on, Ethiopia has reported 69,709 cases, while Nigeria has 57,437 cases and Algeria 50,023.
No other African country has reported more than 50,000 COVID-19 infections.
In terms of deaths, Algeria (1,679), Ethiopia (1,108) and Nigeria (1,100) are the only other African countries besides South Africa, Morocco and Egypt to have recorded more than 1,000 fatalities.
In better news, Africa has registered 1,158,162 successful recoveries.
