Africa’s COVID-19 caseload hits 1,622,455: Africa CDC
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa stood at 1,622,455 as of Saturday afternoon, according to figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The continent continues to see contrasting statistics in different parts as some countries report declining tallies while others see a resurgence in their caseloads.
The Africa CDC data also shows that the continent has recorded 39,584 deaths.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country by the pandemic, having registered 700,203 infections and 18,370 fatalities.
Morocco (167,148) and Egypt (105,159) are the only other countries in Africa that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases.
The three countries account for 59.94 percent of the continent’s caseload.
Further on, Ethiopia (87,834), Nigeria (61,194) and Algeria (53,998) are the only other African countries whose caseloads have surpassed the 50,000 mark.
In terms of deaths, Egypt (6,099), Morocco (2,818), Algeria (1,841), Ethiopia (1,337) and Nigeria (1,119) are the only other countries on the continent that join South Africa in reporting fatalities exceeding 1,000.
Elsewhere, the continent’s number of successful recoveries stood at 1,337,964.
