African Union rejects attempts to form parallel Sudanese government

Read < 1 minute

The African Union expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the recent developments in Sudan, particularly the announcement by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its affiliated political and social forces regarding the establishment of a parallel government.

The AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) said it did not recognize the purported parallel government or entity in Sudan, adding that such actions carried a huge risk of partitioning the country, which has been mired in conflict since April 2023.

The Council also urged AU member states and the international community not to recognize any parallel government or entity that sought to govern Sudan.

It also appealed to its members and the international community not to recognize or provide support or assistance to any armed or political group seeking to establish a parallel government or state entity in Sudan.

In February, the RSF and several allied groups in the Kenyan capital Nairobi signed a charter establishing a “government of peace and unity”.

The move was condemned by the Sudanese government, along with regional and international organizations.
