Some 45 foreign ministers from across Africa have gathered in a retreat in the northern Ethiopia town of ‘Mekelle’. There the foreign ministers who are also members of the executive council of the Africa union have deliberated on pre council meeting topics including agenda 2063 and issues of peace and security.
The Foreign ministers who are now in Mekelle ,The Northern Ethiopia town have mandates of crafting continental agendas for the heads of state to discuss on when they gather at the end of the month. At the event the chairperson of the commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said and I quote “Our Agenda 2063 flagship projects – such as the free movement of people, the Commodities strategy, the Pan African Integrated High speed Rail network – is taking off, and should help towards our vision of an integrated, peaceful and prosperous Africa, driven by its own people and taking its rightful place in the world.’
The Executive council members will see the continent’s security issues including the situation in Burundi and South Sudan. It is hoped that these two items will also be forwarded to the heads of state for them to consider proposed decisions including troops deployment to Burundi for instance.
Before the Assembly of the heads of state, the executive council will meet on Wednesday to adopt agendas which will be put on the tables of the Continent’s leaders. And though this January summit has a theme of human rights with a special focus for women,as usual peace and security agendas are expected to dominate.
