African athletes highlight Lausanne Diamond League
Kenyan Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the men’s 800m at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne on Thursday, finishing with a time of 1:41.11. This result ties him for second place on the world all-time list, just behind the world record of 1:40.91 set by his compatriot David Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympics.
Wanyonyi’s victory was achieved by outpacing Canada’s world champion Marco Arop, who finished with a time of 1:41.72, and France’s European champion Gabriel Tual, who secured third place with a time of 1:42.30.
“I’m so happy to have run the world lead today in Lausanne,” Wanyonyi said. “I really loved the crowd and I hope for the best in Silesia.”
Botswana’s 200m Olympic champion, Letsile Tebogo, made a stunning return by winning the 200m with a time of 19.64 seconds. Erriyon Knighton from the U.S. finished second at 19.78 seconds, while Fred Kerley took third with 19.86 seconds.
Zambia’s Olympic bronze medalist Muzala Samukonga also finished strong in the 400m, clocking 44.06 seconds to secure second place.
In the women’s 800m, Kenya’s world champion Mary Moraa dominated the race, finishing with a time of 1:57.91. The UK’s Georgia Bell secured second place with a time of 1:58.53, closely followed by her compatriot Jemma Reekie, who took third in 1:58.73.
