AFCON 2019: Nigeria suspends training strike over unpaid bonuses

Nigeria’s national men’s football team on Tuesday suspended a training strike in protest against unpaid bonuses at the Africa Cup of Nations after officials from the Nigerian Football Federation pledged to pay a win bonus from their win against Burundi by the end of the week.
Nigerian players had steered clear of the official pre-match conference on Tuesday ahead of their game against Guinea.
Nigeria beat debutants Burundi 1-0 in their opening match of Group B on Saturday and it was expected that the NFF would pay the bonuses following the game’s conclusion.
The NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire, who spoke to AFP, said the matter has been resolved but admitted that there was a delay in receiving money for the tournament.
“The NFF received part of the money meant for the tournament today and is in the process of converting it to dollars to pay the players and officials”, Olajire said.
The NFF has previously struggled to pay athletes their bonuses and allowances at a number of tournaments.
Most recently, the women’s national team at the Women’s World Cup in France staged a sit-in protest to pressure the federation to pay bonuses owed to them following its elimination from the tournament.
