AFCON 2019: Naby Keita returns to Liverpool after sustaining injury
Guinean midfield star Naby Keita has returned to Liverpool for specialist treatment after he suffered a thigh injury in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Keita missed the national Elephants last Group stage game against Burundi, which they claimed a 2-0 victory.
The 24-year-old suffered the thigh injury in Wednesday’s defeat to Nigeria.
Keita was a huge doubt for the 2019 AFCON tournament after sustaining a groin injury in Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Barcelona on May 1.
He however declared himself fit to feature for his country in AFCON and played 62 minutes in the first game against Madagascar, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Guinea finished third in Group B with four points, two behind Nigeria. Debutants Madagascar shocked Nigeria to a 2-0 loss on Sunday to top the group.
The 2019 AFCON continues today with clashes pitting Namibia against Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa against Morocco, Kenya against Senegal and Tanzania against Algeria.
Teams that have already qualified for the Round of 16 stage include, Egypt, Uganda, Madagascar, Morocco, Nigeria and Algeria.
The final game of the competition will be played on 19 July.
