About 160 houses and two schools have been completely damaged after heavy rains experienced in eastern Zambia’s Chipangali district, the country’s disaster management agency said on Monday.
The families were left homeless in a remote area of the district following heavy rains on Saturday night, according to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).
The disaster management agency said in a statement that the houses and the two schools were completely damaged, adding that the affected families have since been provided with tents and other relevant support.
The heavy rains also affected a shed were agricultural produce were kept, resulting in over 1,000 bags of groundnut seeds meant for smallholder farmers going to waste, it added.
The rains also blew roofs of a police station, four churches and several shops.
The country’s meteorological body has already warned that the country was likely to experience normal to above rains with flash floods expected in some areas.
