Ethiopia reports 604 new COVID-19 cases as total caseload hits 71,687
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health on Thursday reported 604 new confirmed coronavirus cases raising the nationwide total to 71,687.
The ministry said that it had 41,076 active cases, out of which 267 were classified as severe cases.
The ministry also reported 208 recoveries from the disease pushing the total number of recoveries to 29,461. The death toll also rose to 1,148 after seven more people died.
Ethiopia is the worst-affected country by the coronavirus in the East African region. The nation’s Health minister Lia Tadesse previously warned that reckless disregard for preventive measures may cause a worst-case scenario during the peak of the pandemic.
The Ethiopian government had launched a nationwide month long testing campaign which was expected to determine the next steps it will undertake in its response to the pandemic.
So far, just over 1.2 million laboratory tests have been carried out in the country.
