Tanzanian authorities said on Wednesday at least 7,000 Burundian refugees sheltered in the country’s western region of Kigoma have registered to go back home under a voluntary repatriation arrangement.

George Simbachawene, the Minister for Home Affairs, revealed this in the country’s northern city Arusha, adding that Tanzania is working with partners on logistics for the voluntary repatriation of the Burundian refugees.

Simbachawene said about 90,000 Burundian refugees have already returned home under the voluntary repatriation arrangement.

Tanzania, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other partners began to oversee the voluntary repatriation of Burundian refugees since September 2017 after the political situation in the east African nation became stable.

Tanzania currently hosts about 164,000 Burundian refugees in the country.
