One person killed in Lagos train accident
One person was killed and an unknown number of others were injured in a crash involving a commuter train and three vehicles in the Nigerian commercial capital Lagos on Monday, according to local authorities.
It is suspected that the three vehicles were attempting to cross the railway line in Oshodi area but failed to do so resulting in the crash which saw the train drag two vehicles over a distance before it came to a halt. One of the vehicles was a minibus which contained six passengers.
However, the exact cause behind the crash was not yet established.
“Upon the arrival of the Eagle Squad at the scene, it was discovered that a white colored bus with GGE 972 GE with six passengers and a Jeep highlander veered onto the train tracks while crossing the rail at PWD inward Oshodi and subsequently collided with a scheduled commuter train,” LASEMA said.
Two people were seriously injured and taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital while those who suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene, LASEMA said.
The BBC reported that the accident resulted in a two-hour delay of train services along the route.
“The wreckage of the bus has been safely removed to allow for free flow of commuter traffic,” LASEMA said on its Twitter handle.
The agency urged members of the public, especially drivers of commuter buses, to obey traffic regulations to prevent injuries and transport delays.
