Kenya on Monday reported 245 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the country’s total to 30,365.
The figures were announced by the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Rashid Aman, who also noted that eight more patients had succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s total tally to 482.
Kenya is one of only seven African countries that have reported more than 30,000 cases, having seen a steady rise in infections over the last month.
In his briefing on Monday, Aman urged Kenyans not to lay their guards down in order to prevent any worsening of the situation in the country.
“Most people have complied with the washing hands culture, but there are those who have not, and should embrace it immediately in order to curtail the spread of the virus and other infectious diseases,” he said.
“High standard of hygiene is the number one measure of keeping Coronavirus disease at bay even as people employ containment measures.”
Continentally, the number of number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa have surpassed the 1.1 million mark as countries on the continent continue to report steady rises in infections.
Five African countries have reported more than 40,000 COVID-19 cases; South Africa (587,345), Egypt (96,475), Nigeria (49,068), Ghana (42,653) and Morocco (42,489).
