Absa Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs went six points clear at the top of the table after coming from two goals down to edge out struggling Polokwane City in a five-goal thriller on Saturday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
Nku Lesiba’s first half goal and Jabulani Maluleke’s strike just after the hour mark gave Polokwane a two-goal advantage apparently consigning Chiefs to a fifth defeat of the season.
However, Serbian striker Samir Nurkovic sparked the comeback 19 minutes from time when he set up Willard Katsande to pull one back for the leaders.
Nurkovic, himself, got on the score sheet five minutes later to level the game and, just seconds later, the comeback was completed when Nurkovic set up Kenyan Anthony Akumu to put Chiefs ahead.
Chiefs were on the ascendancy and looked to add some gloss to the result when they were awarded a penalty in added time but Daniel Cardoso missed his spot-kick.
The result saw Chiefs move on to 52 points, six ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns who were held to a 1-1 draw by Highlands Park.
Sphelele Mkhulise canceled out Peter Shalulile’s opening goal as Sundowns dropped points in the title race, though they do have a game in hand against Chiefs.
In other games, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits stayed third and fifth respectively following a 0-0 draw, while Amazulu and Baroka also played out a similar result.
Elsewhere, Supersport United remained fourth after drawing 1-1 with Bloemfontein Celtic while Ashley Du Preez scored the only goal as 10-man Stellenbosch defeated Golden Arrows 1-0. Cape Town City beat Chippa United 1-0 thanks to a strike by Kermit Erasmus.
Last-placed Black Leopards breathed life into their relegation fight by defeating high-flying Maritzburg United 3-2 with Tiklas Thutlwa scoring the winning goal.
