Defending Tunisian league champions Wydad Athletic Club reclaimed top spot in the Professionnelle Ligue 1 after securing a 3-2 win against Olympique Khouribga at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca on Monday.

Despite a strong first half performance, Wydad fell behind to an own goal by midfielder Hamza Asrir midway through the first half. The champions’ pressure eventually paid off when striker Ismail El Haddad leveled the score four minutes before the break for a 1-1 halftime score.

Wydad picked up where they left off before the break taking the lead three minutes after the restart through Moroccan defender Brahim Najmeddine. DR Congo striker Kazadi Kaasengu increased Wydad’s advantage in the 70th minute as Khouribga pressed for an equalizer.

A penalty by Mohamed El Fakih deep into injury time made the score line more respectable for Khouribga who could have snatched a point were it not for Wydad goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti who made three saves in the second half.

The win saw Wydad return to the top of the table with 40 points, one ahead of rivals Raja Casablanca who have a game in hand. RS Berkane is third on 36 points. Olympique Khouribga remained in 12th position on 23 points.
