Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday said the government will make a final decision in September on whether to reopen schools.
“We shall have to make a big decision before September when the third term is expected to begin. We shall either open some schools for candidate classes; declare a dead year or whatever. Let’s not rush,” Museveni said, while addressing the country on the progress made in the fight against COVID-19.
The president said as the government continues to study the situation, alternative and distance learning through radio and television are being considered.
He said the government will release funds to purchase a radio set for each of the 9 million families in the country.
The Ugandan government in March closed schools, tertiary institutions and universities in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Uganda has so far registered 1,072 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 958 recoveries and zero death since March 21, according to the ministry of health.
