Death toll rises to 7 in Nigeria boat capsize
The number of people killed in Friday’s capsizing of a boat in Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, has risen to seven, a local official said on Monday.
This came after rescuers recovered one remaining body, said Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
A total of 14 people were rescued alive at the end of the rescue operation on Sunday, he said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred due to violation of night-time restrictions, leading to the boat running into an unforeseen object on the waterways.
Oke-Osanyintolu said 19 passengers and two crew members were aboard the capsized boat.
The Lagos government has repeatedly warned boat operators and passengers against night travel on the Lagos inland waterways.
Officials blame most accidents on poor visibility and the failure to wear life jackets by passengers.
