The Chinese Embassy in South Africa on Monday donated food portions to local vulnerable groups as effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to bite.
Li Nan, the Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa was joined by representatives of the Gauteng Province and officials from the ruling African National Congress in the donation exercise.
1000 food parcels were handed to the vulnerable groups in a show of solidarity between China and South Africa in tackling the pandemic.
This was not the first donation by China to help South Africa in its fight against COVID-19.
Since the outbreak of the disease, China has donated to South Africa millions of masks, hundreds of thousand testing kits and ventilators, temperature screening devices, forehead temperature guns and protective suits.
The Chinese Embassy in South Africa said Beijing was willing to deepen cooperation between the two countries in the fight against COVID-19.
Monday’s donation was also a show of solidarity between China and South Africa in tackling shared problems.
South Africa is the worst affected country by the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, having registered 138,134 infections and 2,456 deaths.
