South Africa will allow restaurants and other sectors of the tourism industry to reopen starting Monday as the country looks to recover from its economic downturn prompted by weeks of lockdown.
Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize announced the development on Friday, saying the businesses will however be guided by laid down health regulations.
South Africa is the continent’s most affected country by the COVID-11 pandemic, having registered 118,375 infections and 2,292 deaths.
The regulations set for reopening of restaurants include mandatory wearing of protective masks by all staff and gusts at all times except when eating or drinking. Visitors will also be required to sanitize before accessing the establishments.
Other businesses that will be allowed to resume operations include cinemas, theatres and casinos.
The consumption of alcohol in the restaurants will however remain prohibited, but people can purchase them for home consumption.
