President Buhari warns Nigeria’s ruling party at risk of disintegration
Nigeria’s ruling party is under a threat of disintegration amid internal crisis and rival claims to its leadership, President Muhammadu Buhari warned on Thursday.
Buhari called for urgent intervention to end the wrangles that have rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) which propelled him to power.
“At the moment, our great party is faced with internal wrangling,” Bloombegr quotes Buhari to say at a party meeting in Abuja.
“It is obvious that the fortunes of the party are currently in jeopardy, administration of our party is becoming impossible and there is consequently an urgent need for intervention.”
In the past week, the APC has seen different party officials claim its leadership following the removal of Adams Oshiomhole as the party’s chairman.
According to Bloomberg, an emergency meeting of the party’s national executive committee attended by Buhari decided to appoint a caretaker committee to manage its affairs while directing members to end all current litigations.
The APC was a result of a merger of three main opposition parties and a faction of the former ruling People’s Democratic Party in 2014. A year later, Buhari won the presidency for his first term, and later got re-elected on the same ticket in 2019.
As Buhari’s second term continues however, interest groups are keen to position themselves to take over the party’s helm with a keen eye on the 2023 elections.
