Western countries on Thursday donated some $900 million to support Sudan’s struggling transitional government and help the country overcome an economic crisis.

The donations were made at a conference hosted by Germany to help the Sudanese government run its affairs.

According to a Reuters report quoting officials, the European Union donated around $349.94 million, the United States $356.2 million, Germany 150 million euros and France 100 million euros for various projects in Sudan.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, running the country under a precarious, transitional power-sharing deal with the military since the ouster of former long-serving president Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising last year.

Hamdok is keen to obtain foreign support to help Sudan get back on its feet following years of sanctions and economic downturns.

More donations were still expected at the one-day event.
