Simba Sports Club edged closer to winning Tanzania’s Premier League following a 2-0 victory away against Mbeya City on Wednesday.
John Bocco struck early in both halves to earn the league leaders a second win in three games since the league resumed nearly two weeks ago.
Simba leads the way with 78 points, 20 ahead of second-placed Azam who narrowly lost 1-0 to Kagera Sugar, in eighth, courtesy of Yussuf Mhilu’s first-half goal.
With seven games of the season remaining, Simba only needs two points to confirm their status as league champions.
Meanwhile, a brace from DR Congo’s David Molinga, including a 95th-minute equaliser, earned third-placed Young Africans a 2-2 draw against fourth-placed Namungo. Edward Manyama had earlier put the visitors 2-0 ahead with goals in the 52nd and 70th minutes.
In other games on Wednesday, Green Atupele scored a second-half hat-trick after Justine Omary’s opening goal as Biashara Mara United hammered Kinondoni MC 4-0 to climb into the top half of the table to ninth place while Polisi Tanzania drew 1-1 against Alliance.
On Tuesday Mbao FC and Mtibwa Sugar recorded 1-0 and 3-1 wins over Coastal Union and Singida United respectively. Mwadui beat Lipuli 3-0 and Ruvu Shooting played out a goalless draw against Ndanda.
At the bottom of the table, as many as eight teams are still facing the threat of relegation, however, the fate of Singida United, who are bottom of the league and 11 points adrift of 19th placed Mbao FC, appears to be all but sealed.
