Zambia’s Patson Daka scores again as RB Salzburg extend winning run
Another weekend of football action saw Spain’s La Liga resume following a three-month suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there was no notable mention from there, African footballers continued to make their mark across Europe’s leagues. We take a look at some of the players’ performances from the various leagues across the continent.
AUSTRIA
Zambian striker Patson Daka made it 23 league goals for the season with his team’s second strike as Austrian champions RB Salzburg defeated LASK Linz 3-1 to maintain their seven-point lead at the top of the table. It was Daka’s fourth goal in two games following his hat-trick last week against Hartberg.
DENMARK
Tunisian forward Imed Louati scored a first-half equalizer for Hobro against fellow strugglers Horsens in their relegation group match which ended 1-1.
GERMANY
Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi may not have got his name on the score sheet or provided an assist but his efforts, along with those of others, ensured that Borussia Dortmund kept a clean sheet in a narrow 1-0 win at Fortuna Dusseldorf.
GREECE
Guinea midfielder Mady Camara netted a brace as Greek Super League leaders Olympiacos Piraeus defeated Aris Thessaloniki 3-1 to maintain their 17-point lead over AEK Athens in second.
HUNGARY
Nigerian midfielder Obinna Nwobodo scored his third league goal of the season as Ujpest drew 2-2 at title-chasers MOL Fehervar to move up one place to seventh in the league table.
Fellow Nigerian Tunde Adeniji scored in each half as second-from-bottom Debrecen forced a 2-2 draw against fourth-placed Puskas Academy.
LITHUANIA
Nigerian Emmanuel David scored once as Kauno Zalgiris defeated FK Panevezys 2-0 to snap a two-game losing run in the A Lyga.
PORTUGAL
Cape Verde striker Jovane Cabral’s strike midway through the second half kept Sporting Lisbon in the hunt for a Europa League qualification spot with a 1-0 win at home to Pacos Ferreira.
TURKEY
Nigerian Anthony Nwakaeme and Ghanaian Caleb Ekuban both found the net as Super Lig leaders Trabzonspor outclassed Goztepe 3-1 to maintain their place at the summit on goal difference from Istanbul Basaksehir.
Senegalese forward Mame Thiam bagged two second-half goals as Kasimpasa edged Yeni Malatyaspor 2-1 away from home to move four points clear of the relegation zone in which the home side find themselves in.
Midfielder Bernard Mensah of Ghana opened the scoring for bottom-of-the-table Kayserispor against Fenerbahce but it was not enough as they ended up losing 2-1.
